  9. What is PrintGuard?
  10.  
  11. PrintGuard - a control panel to alert users trying to print on previously identified network printers. Useful for your company, university, cybercafe, wherever there are free access computers with network printers.

  13. Imagine your network includes a dye sublimation printer and somebody tries to use it to print a 300 pages manual... and just think how much this will cost you! PrintGuard will warn this thoughtless user that the printer he/she chose is an expensive one to use.

  15. PrintGuard requires System 7.0 or later.

  17. Installing PrintGuard

  19. To install and activate PrintGuard, you should:
  20.  
  21. - Copy the PrintGuard control panel into your Control Panels folder,
  22. - Restart your Mac.
  23. - Open it and enter the alert message (^0 in the message will automaticaly be replaced by the name of the printer),
  24. - Enter the name of one or two printer(s) in the corresponding fields,
  25. - Optionally, you can enter a password to limit the access of the control panel - useful for network administrators,
  26. - Close PrintGuard

  28. That's it! Now when somebody tries printing with one of the selected printers, the warning will be displayed.

  32. - Be careful to enter the network name of the printer (the name in the list on the right side of the chooser) and not the name of the chooser extension or the name of the icon printer on your desktop.

  35. Paying for PrintGuard
  36.  
  37. PrintGuard is shareware; it is not free. If you use PrintGuard for more than 30 days, you should pay a $10 registration fee. Registrations for PrintGuard are handled by the Kagi Shareware service. After you register, you'll receive information on how to unlock your copy.

  39. Paying for PrintGuard is simple. You can register online using a web browser, or offline using the Register program.

  50. To use the Register utility, you need to:
  51.  
  52. 1. Run the Register program and fill out the form: enter your name, email and/or postal address, and the number of single user (or site, or worldwide) licenses you desire to purchase. The form accepts many different payment  methods such as: US Check, Money Order, Cash (in many different currencies), Visa, Mastercard, American Express, First Virtual, and Invoice (to be given to your accounts payable department). 
  53. A site license covers all computers of a single organization for an area of up to one hundred miles (160 km) in radius.

  55. 2. Send it to Kagi Shareware: either email the data generated by the Register program or print it and send it via postal mail or fax. Credit card information is encrypted by the Register program. The address to send the completed form is output by Register when you Print or Copy the completed form.  The addresses are:

  71. Please do NOT distribute modified versions of PrintGuard. Any distributed copy must be an unregistered copy,  identical to the original PrintGuard package with no modification whatsoever. It would be difficult for us to support modified versions.

PrintGuard may be copied and distributed freely for non-commercial use on online sites (Internet archives, BBSs, etc.), magazines, books, disks or CD-ROMS without the authors' explicit permission, as long as the end-user charges don't exceed reasonable distribution or download costs. An explicit written permission must be obtained from the author for any commercial use.
